Hong Kong mourns the end of its way of life as China cracks down on dissent

As the China National Security Law started to be enforced in Hong Kong, Hong Kongers assembled en masse to protest the law. They were met with police violence, water canons, and curfews. Journalist and photographer Laurel Chor had been covering the protests at their peak in 2019. As she watched the hometown she knew start to slip away, Mallory and Laurel decided to cover the loss of one’s home. Laurel visited iconic places, both for her and for locals, and asked locals to choose the location in Hong Kong that felt most significant to them, and photographed them there.
